Consulting FAQs: Online Business Development

You’ll likely have a few questions before hiring me as your web consultant. I’ll do my best to answer them here, but we can always go over any other questions or concerns via email or phone at a later date.

Can you work on existing websites?
Yes. I am more than happy to work with you to help improve an existing website. We would first discuss your concerns with your current solution and then create a plan of action to address those concerns.
Can you work with existing web teams?
Of course. Think of me as an extension of your existing web development team or web design agency. Once we have identified the areas of your website that need attention and how best to make improvements, I will be happy to work with your existing designers and developers to help make the required changes.
What do you need from me to get started?
If you already have a website, just contact me with your link and an outline of your concerns and goals. We can then discuss the next steps, which may be gaining access to your Google Analytics & Search Console to perform an audit, and the website CMS itself. If you do not have a website and are interested in having one built for your business, we can discuss what solution best suits your needs.
Once you have audited my website, do I need to use you to implement changes?
No. You are free to share my website audit report with your web team so that they can action on the suggested improvements.
Can you teach me how to make changes myself?
Yes, of course. Depending on the technical skills required, I can take you through SEO best practices, content updates and other tasks. However, you may need assistance from a developer for some changes.
What are your payment terms?
For smaller tasks such as website audits, the first 50% of the total cost will need to be settled before work commences. The remaining 50% should be settled within 30 calendar days of the original invoice date. For larger projects, such as website design & development work, we can discuss a suitable payment plan, such as three payments (40/30/30) spread over several weeks or months depending on the length of the project.
Can we meet face-to-face?
If you are local (Hackbridge, Carshalton, Wallington, Sutton, etc), then we may be able to arrange a face-to-face meeting for our initial discussions. Otherwise, early-stage discussions will likely happen over Skype, Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. If you require face-to-face meetings and/or tutorials as part of the consultancy package, we can discuss this in advance and plan accordingly within the scope of work.
Where are you based and what areas do you serve?
I’m based in Hackbridge, South London. Service areas include Carshalton, Mitcham, Wallington, Sutton, Croydon, and the City of London. In fact, pretty much anywhere that I can get to by train, bus or tram from Hackbridge. But don’t let geography get in the way of progress. With so much work processed remotely these days, all we need is a good internet connection and we’ll be good to go!
How long does a project take?
Depending on current levels of work, I always aim to begin new projects ASAP. Website audits can usually be scheduled and completed within 7-14 days. Larger projects requiring website design & development work would require more time, likely between 4 & 12 weeks depending on the complexity of the requirements.
Will I get regular updates on the progress of my project?
Absolutely! A schedule will be provided at the start of every project, with regular feedback sessions and updates planned throughout the process. From initial discussions to planning, costing, design, development and testing, you’ll always know how things are progressing with your project.
Do you work with small businesses or only large companies?
I am happy to work with entrepreneurs, start-ups, local small business owners and larger companies.
What does a web consultant do?
A web consultant helps businesses improve their online presence by providing expert advice on web design, development, SEO, and digital strategy. They assess websites for performance, usability, and effectiveness, offering tailored solutions to enhance user experience, search rankings, and conversions.
How is a web consultant different from a web designer or developer?
Unlike a designer or developer, a web consultant takes a strategic approach, identifying business goals and aligning web solutions accordingly. Services may include website audits, search engine optimisation, platform recommendations, and digital marketing guidance. By leveraging industry best practices and data-driven insights, a web consultant ensures a business’s website is functional, engaging, and aligned with its objectives.
Why should I hire a web consultant instead of a freelancer or agency?
Hiring a web consultant offers a strategic, personalised approach that balances the flexibility of a freelancer with the expertise of an agency. Unlike freelancers, who often focus on execution, consultants provide in-depth analysis, long-term strategy, and tailored solutions. Unlike agencies, which may be costly and impersonal, a consultant offers direct communication, cost-effective services, and a hands-on approach. They assess business goals, recommend the best web solutions, and oversee implementation, ensuring efficiency, usability, and performance. For businesses seeking expert guidance without the overhead of an agency or the limitations of a freelancer, a web consultant is the ideal choice.
